March Book Club

When Jen and I were talking about book club for March (side note: how is it already March?!), we realized 2017 has been a really collaborative year, as far as book club selection goes. When we started this whole thing in 2013, we pretty strictly alternated months. Jen would choose one month, then I would choose. We didn't really discuss it before hand, it was just like "Ok here's what I'm picking for this month."  It was really cool since we were both figuring out what we liked in the book world and we got to develop our tastes together. This year we've worked together each month on what book to select and I think this method might be my favorite. Jen threw out something by V.E Schwab as an option for March, since we both own multiple books by her, and I settled on A Darker Shade of Magic. Teamwork! Even better? It's on sale for $2.99 for Kindle

So, what's it about?
Kell is one of the last travelers--magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes connected by one magical city.

There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, and with one mad King--George III. Red London, where life and magic are revered--and where Kell was raised alongside Rhy Maresh, the roguish heir to a flourishing empire. White London--a place where people fight to control magic and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London. But no one speaks of that now.

Officially, Kell is the Red traveler, ambassador of the Maresh empire, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never see. It's a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.

Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they'll first need to stay alive.

Obviously, we are both really excited about this read! We both tend to love anything with a hint of magic (thanks Harry Potter!). Hopefully you're interested too and you'll join us in reading A Darker Shade of Magic. Then we are get real deep into a book discussion in a few weeks.

Happy reading friends!
